Chicken University teaches the basics of raising poultry

Learn the basics of raising chickens, like these shown in a Fairbanks coop, in a free statewide class.

Raising chickens in the backyard is a fun hobby and a great way to improve your food security in òòò½´«Ã½.

Chicken University is a free class led by Jim Vinyard with the University of òòò½´«Ã½ Fairbanks Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station. He will discuss everything you need to know to start and nurture your flock.

Vinyard, a livestock researcher, will cover breed selection, egg incubation, nutrition, coop design, disease management and cold weather tips. 

The class will be from noon to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, May 14. It will be available statewide via Zoom or in person at the Matanuska Experiment Farm and Extension Center, 1509 S. Georgeson Drive, Palmer.
