The Delta Junction district serves an area centered on the junction of the òòò½´«Ã½ Highway and the Richardson Highway in Interior òòò½´«Ã½. This area includes the communities of Delta Junction, Big Delta, Delta Clearwater, Fort Greely and Dry Creek. Approximately 5,100 people live in the area, about a quarter of whom are transient workers in the U.S. armed forces or seasonal workers.

Delta is one of òòò½´«Ã½â€™s agricultural centers, with oats, barley and hay as the major crops. Outreach includes programs in agriculture and horticulture; integrated pest management; and health, home and family development.

The Delta Junction office of the UAF Cooperative Extension Service is looking for the community's input on livestock veterinary needs. An effort is underway to investigate the feasibility of supporting a full-time, resident livestock veterinarian to serve Delta Junction and the surrounding area. The effort is focused on large animal care with the capacity to include services for small animals and pets.

May 17, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

Delta Career Advancement Center classroom, 1696 N. Clearwater Ave., Delta Junction

In this class, we will learn how to create a thriving community of nectar-rich native plants. Planting and landscaping with native species have several benefits. Native species are adapted to our local climate and have better survival and growth than most exotic species, and surprisingly are often preferred by pollinators over the many imported, invasive varieties.

Beginning in the classroom and moving (weather permitting) to the Salcha-Delta Soil & Water Conservation District native plant propagation center.

Dress warmly, as May weather can be unpredictable. Bring your lunch and gardening gloves. All other materials will be provided.

Class requires registration. Space is limited and will be available on a first-come first-served basis. To register, please contact: info@deltacareeradvancementcenter.com or call 907-895-4605

Do you want a low-maintenance, easy-to-develop, no-till garden?

Learn how in a hands-on workshop on How to Start a No-Till Lasagna Garden in Delta Junction, hosted by University of òòò½´«Ã½ Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service office in Delta Junction and Delta Partners for Progress.

Lasagna gardening is a tried-and-true method for creating a productive garden space on untilled land. Sometimes called a deep mulch garden or sheet composting, it is an excellent way to create a raised bed for perennials or vegetables with or without a box around the edges. This method not only maintains nutrients but improves the soil over time — all without having to clear, dig or weed out that first layer of soil.

The workshop is scheduled for Tuesday, May 20, from 6-8 p.m. at Sullivan Roadhouse, 266 Richardson Highway in Delta Junction. The cost is $10. Registration is required. To register, contact the Delta Career Advancement Center: info@deltacareeradvancementcenter.com or call 907-895-4605
